Out and About with the Languages' Department

EADS is a French company with branches in this country. Recently, as a part of their NVQ French qualification, class 9O, along with Mrs Wilbraham and Mr Cooksey, were invited to visit the EADS site near Duffryn in Newport. We met employees who between them spoke lots of languages – French, German, Spanish and Arabic. We visited the research and development section and got to see different defence and security systems, and we also were able to play with some of the systems. We found terrorists, stopped fires and evacuated a stadium full of rugby fans! One pupil had a moment of panic when he set off an alarm which was used to detect explosives! Luckily though, it was just a demonstration.

It was a fabulous visit, and made us all aware of the usefulness of languages in the workplace.

Languages’ Morning at West Mon

Year 5 pupils from our local primary schools visited West Mon recently, to enjoy the West Mon ‘Languages’ Morning’. Pupils had the chance to experience language themed lessons in West Mon, such as making Spanish food in cookery lessons, German key rings in technology, Welsh drawing in art and of course learning some French, German, Spanish and Welsh. However, pupils said that the most exciting part of the morning was the French breakfast that all pupils enjoyed during their break-time, with delicacies such as baguettes, croissants, brioche, camembert and brie, to name but a few, served by excellent Year 10 waiters and waitresses!
