On Friday 9th January we were lucky enough to have our brand new library officially opened by Alun Carter, West Mon Old Boy, and two of our past pupils, Pontypool RFC’s Ben Parry and Rob Nash.

The library is the culmination of several years of planning and hard work and as a school, we are incredibly proud of the finished facility. The shelves have been stocked with a combination of new books and generous donations from staff and pupils, resulting in an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction for our pupils to enjoy.

Year 7 have started to visit the library to enjoy lessons linked into the Literacy and Numeracy Framework. These lessons are designed to be fun and to promote a love of reading in the pupils.  The library is also proving to be a hive of activity at lunch and break times with many children meeting to share books, play literacy based games and to catch up on homework.

Homework club runs in the library from Monday to Thursday from 3 pm – 4 pm where pupils can complete homework with support from our librarian, Mrs Baker.

What next?

  • Visit from local writer, Richard Finlan, to inspire pupils to write Gothic Horror style short stories.
  • Pupils will be encouraged to participate in Radio 2’s 500 words competition with inspiration from library lessons
  • We will be developing opportunities for parents/carers to come to the library with their children to see how we teach literacy in school, to help families to support learning at home.
  • World Book Day is on March 5th and we have lots of fun activities planned for the children to enjoy.
